WHAT IS IT ?

Shingles or Herpes Zoster is caused by the same virus that causes Chickenpox.
Once you have had Chickenpox the virus stays in your body and can be inactive for many years.
When it becomes active again it causes shingles.

WHERE DOES IT DO ?

Shingles is often a very painful condition with a blistering rash.

The rash can last several weeks and can result in serious complications.

Long term debilitating nerve pain can also occur. Sufferrers often refer to it as “a living hell”

If Shingles occurs on the face it can cause blindness and deafness.

HOW TO PREVENT IT ?

A safe and effective vaccine is available to prevent Shingles and its complications.
All persons over age 50 years are advised to take Shingles vaccine.
Persons who have already had Shingles regardless of age should receive the Shingles vaccine after 1 year.

Shingles – Zostavax Vaccine in Toronto

It is a painful condition often associated with a blistering rash. The rash can last several weeks and can result in serious complications such as skin infection, scarring and chronic nerve pain.

Shingles vaccine

Zostavax is the only vaccine available to help prevent shingles in people 60 years old or older. Zostavax can also help reduce the pain and duration of shingles.

A single dose of shingles vaccine is needed.

What are the risks?

No serious problems have been identified with shingles vaccine.

Some mild reactions may be soreness, swelling, redness where the injection was given and a headache.
