In most other parts of the world Polio has been eradicated through strong vaccination efforts.

There is no treatment for Polio virus.
Frequent hand washing is important to stop spread from contact infected people.
A booster (extra) vaccination is important for travellers to areas of risk.

Polio is a virus infection spread from person to person. Most people infected with polio will recover, however some may become paralyzed and even die. Most Canadian travelers have been vaccinated against polio during their childhood. However their immunity against polio falls as they get older. Therefore travelers to areas of the world where polio cases are still reported should consider getting a booster dose of polio vaccine prior to travel.

Patients who have had life-threatening allergic reactions to the antibiotics neomycin, streptomycin, and polymyxin B should not receive polio vaccine.

Side effects from the polio vaccine are limited to a sore spot at the site of the injection in some people.
